About Darren

A Carrer With a Few Twists

I've had quite a journey, with plenty of twists and turns along the way.

I spent 18 years in the Australian Army, starting as an Artillery Observer in a Parachute Regiment and later becoming a Military Instructor for Recruit Training. I also specialized in Artillery Communications and technology at the School of Artillery. During my military career, I needed an outlet for my creativity, and discovered a passion for photography.

Since leaving the Army, and for over 9 years, I’ve been a freelance photographer, working with amazing clients. I now specialize in corporate headshots.

Alongside my freelance work, I’ve spent 3 years teaching photography at the diploma level.I love sparking critical thinking and artistic expression in my students, and it’s been amazing to see many of them go on to great careers of their own.

I've been lucky enough to receive three Highly Commended Awards for my black-and-white photography in the Mono Awards 2021 and 2023.

I spent a good majority of 2024 upgrading my Advanced Diploma in Photography to a Bachelor’s degree impoving my skills and preparing to re-enter teaching part-time.
